How to change and manage your Google passwords for more security
According to the consulting firm Saas Scout, the Gmail mail service already has more than 1.8 billion users in the world. You are one of them? From ANOVO we show you in this article how to change and manage your Google passwords so that you can enjoy its services with greater security.
In order to access the services associated with Google
Workspace, it is necessary to log in with a Google Account, indicating the
username and password. In addition to this suite of services, which includes
everything from the document manager and various office automation applications
to YouTube, having a Google account also serves to log in on different devices,
such as Android terminals. In addition, more and more external applications
allow you to log in with these credentials.
For both personal and professional accounts, it is
recommended to change your Google password regularly to improve security. Let's
see how to do it:
How to change your Google password
The easiest way to change your Google password is from a
personal computer (Windows or MacOX). To do this, follow the following steps:
1.Log into your Google account (myaccount.google.com).
2.Access "Security" in the side menu.
3.Select "Password" in the "Sign in to
Google" section.
4.Log in with your current credentials.
5.Enter the new key in the two boxes that appear.
6.Press the "Change password" button.
Change the password on an Android device
To change the Google password from an Android tablet or
mobile:
1.Access "Settings"> "Google">
"Manage your Google account".
2.Select the "Security" section.
3.Browse through the list of options and click on
"Password".
4.Go to "Sign in to Google."
5.Enter the new password in the two sections that appear.
6.Press "Change password".
Change Google password on iOS
Changing the password on devices with that operating system
(iPhone and iPad) must be done directly in the Google app. For it:
1.Open the app and touch your profile or initial image,
depending on how you have personalized your user, and select "Manage your
Google account."
2.Click on the "Personal information" section.
3.Mark "Password" in the "Profile"
section.
4.Attain the new password in the two form fields that
appear.
5.Press "Change password".
Once the process has been carried out with any of these
methods, you will receive an email from Google advising of the change. You will
have to log in again on all your devices since, being linked, it will be closed
automatically.
The process to recover the Google password is very simple.
In the same window where the space to enter the email account and current
password appears, click on the "Recover password" link and follow the
steps that appear. After indicating the email whose password you want to
recover, Google offers several recovery options:
•sending a link to another associated account,
•a message to the associated phone number
•or answering security questions.
If the "Two-step verification" is activated, in
addition to the above, it offers you the possibility of entering the
verification code of the Google Authenticator app, which you must have
installed on your mobile device, showing that the person trying to access is
the Account owner. Keep in mind that they are short-lived codes, so you will
only have a few seconds to enter it in the recovery box. After entering it, the
previous three options for resetting the password will reappear.
Strong passwords
Having a strong password is imperative to keep your personal
account information, as well as your emails and documents stored in the cloud,
protected. In addition, the more complex it is, the more difficult it will be
for third parties to access your account data.
Although the password consists of a combination of letters,
numbers and symbols based on the ASCII standard, without accents or accented characters,
it is important that it meets a series of requirements:
•Avoid simple and insecure sequences such as
"password1234".
•When updating a new password, it is best not to reuse an
old password.
•Do not start or end the sequence with a blank space.
The more complex the combination, the more difficult it will
be for third parties to access, but it is important that you are able to
remember it so that you do not have to continually restore it.
Here are some tips intended for choosing a suitable
password:
1.Choose a different password for each email account and
service, avoiding reusing the same password for multiple accounts. In this way,
if someone gets one, they will not have access to the rest of the accounts.
2.Use passwords longer than 10 characters. It can be, for
example, a phrase that is easy for you to remember, but prevents it from being
known by people around you or being related to you through Google searches.
3.Avoid including personal information such as name,
nickname or birthday.
4.Avoid common words or consecutive characters.
There are also strong password generators for Android
devices, such as Password Generator, from Vectura Games OÜ (rated 4.6 on
GooglePlay), and for Mac computers, such as Password Generator 3.3, developed
by Kerem Erkam (rated 4.9 on MacAppStore).
Is it advisable to use password managers?
If you have trouble retention all your passwords, the first
recommendation that we make from ANOVO, as technology specialists, is that you
do not write them down on a piece of paper and leave them visible in common
places such as in the office or pasted on a PosIt in the display. It is
preferable that you save them in the password manager of the device that you
use regularly.
We already said you in a previous post what is Smart Lock ,
the Android password manager, which you can entree from
"Settings"> "Accounts"> "Smart Lock", and
what are its advantages.
IOS device users who want to use a password manager have the
“iCloud Keychain”, which is accessed through “Settings”> [username]>
“iCloud”> Activate “iCloud Keychain”. In addition, the iPhone and iPad
password manager shares the keys between all the devices linked to the main
account within the Apple ecosystem.
Passwords saved in Google Chrome
Every time a new session is started in the Google Chrome
browser, a notification appears in it that gives the option to store the
password within its password manager (passwords.google.com). This information
canister be viewed, edited and deleted in the Chrome application, in the
"Settings"> "Passwords" menu.
By activating "Log in automatically" it will not
be necessary to enter the credentials each time you want to access a website,
but if you lose your device, third parties may have access to them.
From ANOVO we recommend that you renew your passwords at
least once a year and whenever they may be at risk. We invite you to stay up to
date with our advice and news through our blog or on our common networks:
Facebook and Instagram .
